Most of these poster designs are for Taproot Theatre.
The key to designing a poster for a play is in balancing storytelling with delivery of information. A human element of some sort and typography that appeals to something familiar within the viewer.
The Bishop’s Wife is a classic holiday story. Most people are familiar with the movie version with Cary Grant to some degree. Our target audience for live theatre is in the 40-60 age range, so they will most certainly recognize the movie poster aesthetics of the 1940s. All those elements harken to the delightful traditions and cozy feeling that we love during the holiday season.
Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Story is a comedy based on the classic mystery novels. A poster for this play would be remiss to leave off an image of the iconic detective. The overall treatment is fitting for the dark and gritty tone we have come to expect of the genre, however, this being a comedy, that is not enough. The silhouetted figures tell us more of the story and speak to the absurdity of their action in the play. Combined, we have a snapshot to intrigue any classic mystery fan!
Each poster here has a similar trajectory of story, concept, and audience considerations. It’s a fun process!
